Configuring Outlook Express for Rum email with SSL encryption
By Crash
Start Outlook Express and add your Rum account. Click Tools on the top menu bar, then click accounts. Watch where my cursor is - click on Add, then Mail as in the pic.
The Internet Connection Wizard pops up. Type your name however you want it to display in your emails, then click Next.
Type your actual email address here. Not what you want it to be but what it actually is, as given to you by me - His Highness Crash. Then click Next.
Fill in the fields exactly as shown. Remember, your incoming/outgoing/pop3/smtp mail server is always mail.clan-rum.org. All of them, no matter what they call them are always mail.clan-rum.org. Click Next.
Type your account name and password. Account name is not your entire email address, it is just the account name. As in "crash" or "blessed" or whatever. All this stuff is case sensitive too so make sure everything is in lower case. You can capitalize your name in that first box but not your account info. Click Next.
Click Finish.
As in the first step, go back to Tools/Accounts. Highlight your Rum account and click on the Properties button. Click the Servers tab, then under "Outgoing Mail Server" click the box beside "My server requires authentication". Then click the "Settings" button.
Make sure for Logon Information that "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is checked, then click ok. Now click the "Advanced" tab.
Click both "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" boxes for Outgoing mail and Incoming mail. Then click OK.
Now click the "Send/Recv" menu bar button. wtf? The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that could not be verified??? That's because I generated my own Certificate of Authority and used it to sign the server certificate for the email server. Why? Because buying one is expensive. wtf am I talking about? You probably don't want to know but if you do you can read about it here. These certificates are a form of digital identification and are needed for SSL encryption. We don't care about the identification part, only the encryption so I created my own certificates rather than paying Verisign $900 a year for one. So just click "Yes" here and it will store the certificate and won't ask you again. You are finished.
